Work made in 2000

Most of the work made this year was for a solo show back home in Iceland in September same year.

I began the year by finishing off couple of clay parts that had been made last year or the year before and needed some extra help to be finished.

For Dark Keel I took a forging class.

I liked forging so much that I am in the process of putting up a little setup in my own studio to manipulate metal this ancient way.

When I found out that I was going to move to a little town on the east coast I got a little worried that my "art life" might suffer a little so I went on the net and started to look for things that would tell me about my new area. As I was doing this I found that I started making new kind of artwork. I call them feelers for they in a way show how I was trying to feel my way through the web to my new home. To my biggest surprice I found there are lots of artists over there and a good connection between art, artists and the public.

Length 34 x 17 x 17(cm)

The orginal idea for this piece came from an old plastic float that I saw in a potters collection. The owner obviously likes them too for there was a whole wall display of them but then the rest of his house was covered with pottery.

I had to remake New Life II for it didn't survive the planetrip to Iceland. It litterally exploded. I had not realizied that I had covered up the airhole into the sculpture so the pressure difference got the better of it.

New Life II (b) is the only piece in my solo show at Gallery Fold that year that was made in Iceland all the other work was made in my studio in the US.

The back of Sailing

There is a little story behind "Waiting" and "Sailing". Every easter egg in Iceland is made out of a case of chocolate, filled with candy and then there is a little piece of paper in there that will have a saying on it. I used to keep mine and put them up on my bulletin board. One year I got "Kongur will sigla en byr hlytur ad rada" = the king wants to sail but the wind desides. At that time in my life I was in medical school and feeling miserable. I was realizing it was not for me to follow in my mothers footseps. The year after I got the saying "Sa faer byr sem bidur"= He who waits will catch the wind. That was so right. I had made up my mind and enrolled in artschool and life has been good to me ever since.
