Artist's Statement

I grew up in Nova Scotia, Canada, surrounded by the sea, woods and water.  I chose a career in business, but took time in my twenties and again five ago to buy paints and experiment with abstracts in acrylics.  In September 1997 I began to draw and paint seriously under the direction of master painter, Ning Hou.  He has emphasized process, structure and technique, but above all, expressing feeling, love and connection with nature and the universe through art.

I work with oil and canvas, using a technique of mixing the paints from the palette for each individual stroke.  This takes longer, but results in a fresh and vibrant effect. I began with landscapes and still life, and later, focused on people. I am inspired to capture people in their everyday lives, during moments of reflection, engrossed in the things that give them pleasure, when they feel most alive.  Over the last six months I have been practicing various techniques on a series of patios and gardens, trying to capture a realness while working with different aspect of light.

My painting has given me a part of my life back that I lost when I was young.  I have rediscovered the spontaneous creative self that expresses clearly and directly, without any editing for any audience.  My feelings have been extreme while painting; I have been terrified to make the first stroke, or the 100th; I have been in tears of joy and tears of pain.  I have felt deep gratitude for the creative energy in life that runs through us all, and the happy circumstances that have brought me to this place where I let its waters refresh me.  Most importantly, I feel very alive when I paint.  I am in the place where the essence of me lives, and is at home.

I live in San Francisco with my husband, Chris Delmar, and our son, Max.
