* doorways on the studio pages are a big win. make the pages much
more interesting and clueful for the visitors.

* sub-sections would be fine.

* i don't like the
Artists working in more than one media
Mixed Media
sub-section categories. doesn't tell me enough as a viewer of art.net

* you migth add sub-section categories for
Drawing
Etching and Printmaking
Calligraphy

* i would list an artist more then once, if they ask to be so listed,
and they actually have done some work in all areas requested.
e.g. Lile's default listing would be under Painters, but she
might ask for one under Computer Artists as well. my default would be
under Hacker Artists, but i might ask for additional listings under
Poets and Collagists.

* you might add a button/link on the home page, the studio page, the
gallery and maybe other pages to select an artist at random. a fifth
rectangle on the blue navigation bar?
this would let visitors be exposed to artists and media they
might not counciously choose.

* do alphabetical indexes by both first name and last name. e.g. many
visitors to the site would be likely to look for Lile as just "Lile".
artists with just one name, should have it indexed as both their last
and first names.
Definitely have an alphabet navigation bar:
A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | I | J | K | L | M | N | O | P | Q | R
| S | T | U | V | W | X | Y | Z
They could be done as one combined index, by
reversing the names on one entry. e.g.

<STRONG>Elam</STRONG>, Lile

...

<STRONG>Len</STRONG> Tower

...

<STRONG>Lile</STRONG> Elam

...

<STRONG>Tower</STRONG>, Len
