Sweetheart Abbey.

Looking east in
the nave toward the
laybrothers' choir.

Sweetheart Abbey was
chartered on 10 April,
1273 by Devorgilla, a
royal lady of Scotland
as a tribute to her beloved
husband John Balliol,
who had died four years
earlier. On his death,
she had his heart embalmed
and placed in an ivory
and silver casket.
She kept this with her
until her death in 1290.
The casket was buried
with her in the monastery
which she had founded,
and in a fitting tribute
to her undying love,
the monks named it Dulce Cor,
or Sweetheart.
