Jody, I think you misunderstood my point, which is really the opposite of
the slavery situation you cited. In fact, it was because there were a
brave few who dared to speak out against the institution of slavery that it
eventually became generally accepted that this was not an acceptable way to
treat human beings. The fact that racism in America still lives on
(thrives?) is not really relevant, given that racism in general is not seen
as an acceptable behaviour.
Similarly, if there are those who claim some experimental form to be
"dance", then perhaps the noun will eventually embrace these other forms in
the general consciousness - or not...
