"Is there an answer?"
"....One...."
(Cella) "There is always one who loves more."
It was a common saying.
I wondered if I should warn Cesca. But I guessed there was no need. She
knew how I seized upon my interests, my projects, and she thrived
seeing, and participating, furthering them as she would. I did not think
there was any danger for her.
Surprisingly, I thought there was no danger to myself. I had known, until
that time, that there was no all-consuming devotion for me. This, I had
decided, had both isolated and enlivened me fashioning me a harlequin of
unsustainable dichotomy. I suppose that statement is an inexcusably
lyrical sketch of the pain I caused others not strange as I was strange.
(Alma) I had realized years ago that there was no all-consuming love
for me separate from my work.
It was a common saying:
"There is always one who loves more."
I did not think there was any danger for her.
Adonie. If I thought anything, which I did not acknowledge that I did at
the time, then it was that Adonie would be safe because she was focused
on her work as I was focused.
Safe.
What a term.
I didn't exactly mean safe but could not think of one more fitting.
We could be friends, we could be even closer than that, but with our work
we would not be all to each other in the way that others were left devoid
of meaning, purpose, of a life, when they were parted from their
companions, their loves.
It was a ridicuolus assumption, of course. Ridiculous for me to make in
this world. And a ridiculous attempt to categorize what could
never be sliced out precisely.
"There is always risk. That's the danger and the exhilaration. The reward comes not without its price. It would be worthless otherwise."
(Zora) She is different now, she says. It's true. She is different.
She is a gem.
But it's too late. She has taken from me. She has broken the promises
she made to me. The things she did to me then, before her
transformation into an instrument of justice and compassion, I will never forget. I will
remember them. Forever.
She has left me in the ruins of shadow and reaps the praises of all who
see her.
I will make her pay.
Far into the future when she has forgotten, I will make her pay. I will call
in the debt to justice she can never erase no matter how long or
devotedly she works.
I will destroy her.
(Zora) What is this? What is this?
You can't think you can hide anything from me. Not on your person or in
it or in this house. I know you and I'll see that none of what you've
wanted will come to be. The future you hoped for will never be. I'll see to
that.
Dead, are you? Finally?
Now my time has come.
