The kind of construction that happened in early 2001 at 1-4 Hayden Terrace, with no notice to neighbors and no real consideration of its many effects, could happen anywhere in Somerville.

History of the Dispute

In the fall of 2000, the new non-resident owners of a residential building in Somerville began work on the building after having posted in the window, as required by law, a permit describing the work being done. Since the permit indicated that only internal demolition was underway, the neighbors had no particular concerns, and were, in fact, pleased that the building was being improved.

Only when framing for an additional storey appeared did the neighbors become concerned, due to the very detrimental consequences of a much taller building, which blocks light, reduces privacy and creates parking problems due to the increase in the number of people living in the structure. This site contains materials which describe the struggle to remedy the situation, which has been underway since early 2001.
