Unix sucks, so we wrote the Unix-Haters Handbook:

It even comes with a free Unix Barf Bag!

Please read the Preface to the UNIX-HATERS HANDBOOK, to find out it's all about! To get your bile churning, here is the chapter on The X-Windows Disaster.

The Unix Haters Handbook is published by IDG Books Worldwide, Inc. 155 Bovet Road, Suite 310, San Mateo, CA 94402. Copyright (C) 1994 by IDG Books Worldwide. ISBN 1-56884-203-1. Edited by Simson Garfinkel, Daniel Weise & Steve Strassmann. With Forward by Donald Norman, Apple Computer, and Anti-Forward by Dennis Ritchie, AT&T Bell Labs.

Mark Lottor and Don Hopkins organized a cathartic Unix Haters BOF at Usenix:

Are you fed up with frequent fastboots, ineffective NFS, lousy libraries, creeping C++, broken X-Windows, monsterous Motif, mumbling manual entries, mutilated Makefiles, slimey sendmail, and satanic shells scripts? Come and vent polemic with other victims of Unix, and learn that you are not alone; yourt problems with Unix are not your fault!

When Don called the Usenix office to arrange it, and told them the name of the BOF, they asked why we'd want to have a "Unix Haters" BOF at a Usenix convention. He pointed out that the people who most hate Unix are ones who actually have to use it, so what better a place to throw a Unix Haters BOF than at Usenix? The turnout was strong, and the audience participitation rowdy! Everybody told their favorite Unix Horror Stories, and the best stories won a CDROM of Unix Software to fry in the microwave on stage! Then we put the fried CDROMs on the overhead projector for everyone to enjoy.
