Compression across Platforms

Is there a compression program that works across Unix/Windows?
compress Unix; uncompress Windows; and vise versa?

I think I have pkzip on windows, but is it available on Unix (i.e.
Netcom --- I will search)

For Tif and Gif there may be limited or NO benefit to compression; since
they are supposedly efficient formats. BUT FOR TEXT The benefit in
space and time is quite huge!
