how much patience while thumbnails load?

hi there! i'm in the process of redoing my site, and i want to have a bunch
of thumbnail gifs (or jpegs) on my first page, directing people to
different areas of my studio. the gifs are about 2" X 1.5", file size
varies greatly by picture. nevertheless, do people have an idea of how many
thumbnails on a page they have the patience to wait for and at what point
they persoanlly get annoyed the page is still loading? Obviously everyone's
connection is different so we won't have consensus, i'm just wondering how
people feel. I think four is OK, 8 maybe? 12???
