This can be really annoying. But Art on the Net
has a really useful tool which may help.
Instead of ftp'ing each file tar or zip the files
together and ftp that file. Then at:

http://www.art.net/fmlogin.html

you will find a wonderful way to login to
your account and untar/unzip the file.
