Three Views...
The painted photograph is the shared medium of three Peninsula photographers featured in the Gallery at the 1870 Art Center in Belmont. Each of the women begins with a black and white photograph using formats ranging from 35mm to the 4x5 view camera, conventional B&W films to infared.
By the time the image is translated to B&W photographic paper, the photographer has already interpreted her subject matter at least twice-- once in the camera, then in the printing.
The third interpretation takes place beyond the darkroom in hand painting. Whether the image is a landscape, still life, or nude, they add yet another layer of interpretation to the final image--one that corresponds to the colors of their personal vision -- true to their intention, not necessarily a rendering of "reality."
Based in Palo Alto, these three photographers share a friendship that both supports and challenges them. They have been actively teaching and exhibiting in the local arts community and in galleries elsewhere.
All are represented in collections through the country. Saelon Renkes has just completed a solo show in Santa Barbara at Sullivan Goss Gallery. Brigitte Carnochan, represented by the Photographer's Gallery in Palo Alto, will open her fourth annual show at the Granary Gallery in Martha's Vineyard on July 6 and a solo show at Peter Fetterman Gallery in Santa Monica on December 6. Christina Florkowski, represented by Photography West in Carmel, and is a member of the 1870 Art Center artist community.
