For those interested, the Laban Centre London runs summer courses the last
two weeks in July. This year, they will offer for the first time a course
entitled "Investigating Digital Dance" (no, this doesn't mean taking Terry
Braun's fingerprints -- but obviously the title is a reference to the
events he has organised here in London annually for the last 5 years). Pls
note that it is a 'discussion based' class -- not hands on.

For more information on the rest of the summer programme and how to
register, etc. please contact the Laban Centre/ email: info@laban.co.uk /

Investigating Digital Dance
***************************

19-30 July 1999

This new course is primarily a discussion based (rather than hands on)
course which examines a range of dance projects involving digital
technologies. The course is designed to provoke a critical and discursive
engagement with the relationship between dance and technology from
historical, cultural and aesthetic perspectives, and to examine, in the
context of specific projects, the impact of technology on the dance body,
time, space, and movement.

Lecturers: Scott deLahunta, Anna Pakes, Val Rimmer and guests.

Areas covered by the course include:

1. Contextual overview of digital dance projects

2. Applications of digital multimedia tools to dance practice, e.g. motion
capture and choreographic animation, interactive and realtime performance
software, dance education cd-roms, etc.

3. Dance in Digital and Telematic Spaces, e.g. webdances, dancing on line,
remote performance collaborations, etc.

4. Discussion and debate in relation to technology on topics such as
interactivity, live versus media presence, bodies and digital processes,
performer/ audience relationship, etc.
