This was initiated in Santa Clara county in 1985-86 by a small group of artists working at the Citadel on Martha Street in San Jose. Their purpose then and now is to acquaint the general public, educators, art lovers and collectors with the variety of art objects created by the artists who live and/or work here. Visitors are invitied into the artists' work spaces to speak with them informally and to purchase their artworks directly. It is an especially wonderful opportunity for introducing children to the world of visual expression and parents are urged to bring the entire family.
Work spaces may be private studios in the artist's dwelling, shared spaces designed for working in a specific medium, e.g. printmaking, or complexes lodged in warehouses. Because some work places are located where it is difficult to host the public, several artists may group together in the studios of another artist during this event.
The artworks or media to be seen include handmade books, calligraphy, ceramics, collage, digital images, fiber, glass, jewelry, mixed media, paintings, drawings, photography, printmaking and sculpture of several kinds (ceramic, metal, mixed media, paper, stone, wood). None of the works are prejudged for entry. All are acceptable for this event. In a sense, then, the public is the judge!
